In 2016, the average labour cost in France is 34.3 euros per hour worked. Gross wages and salaries constitute two-thirds of this cost, while the remaining one-third consists mainly of employers' social security contributions, less any subsidies received by employers.

Hourly labour cost vary significantly depending on the sector of activity, the geographical location or the size of the company: they are highest in the financial and insurance sector (57.9 euros), in large companies (38.9 euros) and in Île-de-France (42.5 euros).

In the non-farm business sector, France is the fifth country in the European Union of 15 with the highest hourly labour costs.
