Contrasting changes in living standards at the time of retirement
On average, people who retired in 2013 have a lower standard of living in 2016, three years after they retired, than they had in 2010, three years before they retired: -6.9% for women and -9.1% for men. This is the case for six out of ten new retirees.
The situation of new retirees varies according to the standard of living. The average standard of living of those in the poorest 10% in 2010 increases by 69% between 2010 and 2016, while that of the most affluent 10% falls by 27%. Retirement leads in particular to an increase in the average standard of living of people who have experienced difficult situations at the end of their career on the labour market.
Three years before retirement, 10% of the new pensioners in 2013 are poor. Three years after retirement, only 7% are poor, but it is often the same people who are poor before and after retirement.
