In 2018, four out of ten people got married in the department where they were born
In 2018, there were 235,000 marriages in France. For the past six years, the number of marriages has been stable, after a downward trend since 2000. For the first time since the promulgation of the law of 17 May 2013, fewer than 7,000 marriages of same-sex couples have been celebrated.
42% of the persons who got married in 2018 were united in the department where they were born. 8% in the commune where they were born. It is more frequent in the north and east of France, and in the overseas departments.
The youngest brides and grooms, those getting married for the first time and those in opposite-sex couples got married closer to their place of birth than others.
Eight out of ten people got married in their commune of residence, especially for the oldest married, those of foreign nationality and those in same-sex couples.
