In December 2019, oil prices increased Prices of oil and raw material imports - December 2019

In December 2019, the prices of oil in euros increased again (+5.6% after +5.9%). The prices in euros of imported commodities (excluding energy) accelerated (+2.5% after +0.8%) as those industrial raw materials recovered (+3.0% after −1.6%). The prices of raw food materials eased (+2.1% after +3.3%).

Oil prices recovered

In December 2019, the prices of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in euros increased almost the same magnitude as in November (+5.6% after +5.9%) to an average of €60 per barrel. In dollars, the increase was almost the same magnitude as in November, because the euro appreciated a bit (+6.3% after +5.9%).

Industrial commodity prices recovered

In December 2019, the prices of industrial raw materials recovered (+3.0% after −1.6%) driven by mineral materials prices (+3.3% after −2.0%), of which those of ferrous metals (+8.6% after −4.3%) and precious metals (+0.3% after −1.6%). However, the prices of non ferrous metals fell back (−1.5% after +0.4%). The prices of agricultural raw materials accelerated a bit (+0.9% after +0.7%) driven by pulp (+1.8% after 0.0%). The price of natural rubber increased less than in November (+4.8% after +6.3%) as well as those of tropical wood (+1.1% after +2.0%). The price of hide fell back (−3.0% after +0.4%) as those of as sawn softwood (−0,6% after 0.0%). The prices of natural textile fibres decreased less than in November (−0.1% after−1.6%).

Food commodity prices increased less than in November

In euros, the prices of imported raw food materials increased less than in November (+2.1% after +3.3%). Indeed, the prices of tropical foodstuffs eased (+5.3% after +8.2%) as those of meats fell back (−0.6% after +5.8%). However, the prices of seafood products bounced back (+1.8% after +0.7%) as those of oil seeds and vegetable oils eased (+1.1% after +0.2%) and sugar (+4.0% after +2.1%). The prices of cereals recovered (+1.8% after −1.5%).
