In September 2019, oil prices recovered Prices of oil and raw material imports - September 2019

In September 2019, the prices of oil in euros recovered (+7,6% after −6.9%). The prices in euros of imported commodities (excluding energy) recovered too (+0.4% after −6.4%) as those of industrial raw materials (+1,8% after −10,8%). However, the prices of raw food materials decreased for the third month in a row (−1,0% after −1.1% after −0.7%).

Oil prices recovered

In September 2019, the prices of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in euros recovered(+7,6% after −6,9%) to an average of €57 per barrel, after attacks against Saudi oil fields. In dollars, the decrease was less wide (+6,4% after −7.6%) because the euro depreciated a bit in August.

Industrial commodity prices recovered

In September 2019, the prices of industrial raw materials recovered (+1.8% after −10.8%). They were driven by mineral materials prices (+2.1% after −11.8%), of which those of ferrous metals (+0.8% after −21.5%) and non ferrous metals (+3.3% after −1.0%). The prices of precious metals increased less than in August (+4.1% after +6.7%). The prices of agricultural raw materials decreased less than in August (−0.1% after −4.0%) as  pulp (−2.5 % after −5.8 %). The prices of natural textile fibres recovered (+1.4% after −4.2%), natural rubber (+0.3% after −7.3%), sawn softwood (+1.4% after −6.1%) and tropical wood (+2.8% after −1.8%). The prices of hide increased again (+4.2% after +12.6%).

Food commodity prices kept decreasing

In euros, the prices of imported raw food materials decreased again (−1.0% after −1.1%) because of cereals (−0.6% after −2.3%), sugar (−2.4% after −4.1%), seafood products (−3.3% after −2.2%), and meats (−5.5% after +7.5%). The prices of oil seeds and vegetable oils kept increasing (+1,2% after +0.4%) and those of tropical foodstuffs recovered (+4.9% after −8.0%).

Petroleum products: prices of petroleum are quotations from the Rotterdam market which supplies European market.

Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw materials prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).
