Insee FocusSummer 2018 tourist season: occupancy rising thanks to non-resident clientele

In mainland France, summer occupancy of collective tourist accommodation increased by 1.3% in 2018, after +6.1% in 2017, catch-up year after the decline following terrorist attacks in 2015 and 2016. Occupancy of non-residents grew markedly (+4.3%), while that of residents was practically stable (−0.1%). As in 2017, growth was particularly strong in urban areas (+3.7%), especially in the Île-de-France (+7.7%). It is moderate in coastal areas. The high mountain regions are in difficulty (−6.8%). Overall, occupancy is increasing in the northern region of France, while it is falling in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and the Occitanie.
