In 2018, 0.9% of cohabiting couples are same-sex couples. Thus, 266,000 persons live with a same-sex partner. The proportion of these couples has increased: it was 0.6% in 2011.

It is between the ages of 25 and 29 that it is most common to live with a partner of the same sex for women (0.9%), and between 30 and 34 of ages for men (1.1%).

Same-sex couples are more prevalent in the most populated areas. The proportion of same-sex couples is higher in the Île-de-France region (1.4%), particularly in the inner city area of Paris (3.7%). Thus, 15% of male couples in France live in Paris, 7% of female couples, compared to 3% of all couples.

Persons living in a same-sex couple have higher levels of education than those living with a partner of the opposite sex.

60% of cohabiting same-sex couples registered their union: they are married or bound by a Civil Solidarity Pact (PACS). 14% of same-sex couples live with children, mostly female couples.
