Insee PremièreConsumer behaviour in 2017 Transport weighs more in rural areas, housing in urban areas

Alexandra Ferret et Elvire Demoly, division Conditions de vie des ménages, Insee

In 2017, households consume an average of 34,000 euros of goods and services, as much as in 2011, in constant euros. Differences between households persist. The wealthiest 20% of households consume 2.6 times more than the most modest 20% of households. For these latter, food (except for catering) weighs more on their budget than on the one of the richest households. Single-parent families consume significantly less than average. The oldest ones also consume less than the others, although they tend to get closer to the average. Households living in rural areas spend a larger part of their budget on transport, while those living in urban areas spend more on housing. Beyond "traditional" ways of consuming, one-third of households have already sold, bought or exchanged goods and services with other households in 2017. This collaborative economy is more widespread among young and graduate households with children.
