Employment and unemployment in the DOMs (France’s Overseas Departments): the gap with metropolitan France remains high
Between 2014 and 2018, the unemployment rate decreased in the four historical DOMs while the employment rate did not vary substantially. The gap with metropolitan France remained stable and high. Over the same period, in French Guyana, the halo around unemployment, already high, increased slightly. Mayotte stands out from the other DOMs due to its increasing unemployment rate, which reached 35% in 2018. The situation worsened over the past four years, partly due to demographic growth which increases the volume of candidates into the labor market.
