The proportion of children under 18 years of age living in shared residency doubled between 2010 and 2016 to reach 2.7% in 2016. So 400,000 children spend nearly equal time with each of their separated parents.

The proportion of children who alternate between the home of each parent increases uniformly with the age of the children. It is the highest between 11 and 14 years old (3.8%).

The standard of living in households with children in shared residency is higher on average than that of all households with minor children. There are actually few children living in shared residency among the less well-off.

More children live in shared residency in the Western part of mainland France and in the South of France, particularly in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Conversely, shared residency is less frequent in the Greater Paris region and in French overseas territories.
