In 2017, 606,000 people died in France. Half were over 83 years old and a quarter over 90 years old. The average age at death has been increasing for fifty years. It rose from 72 for women who died in 1967 to 83 for those who died in 2017, and from 64 to 76 for men over the same period. Since 1967, the number of infant deaths has fallen to one-sixth the level in that year.
