Insee PremièreFrench agriculture in Europe from 2000 to 2015 In the fore, but positions eroding

Didier Reynaud, division Industrie et agriculture, Insee

France is the leading agricultural producer in the European Union, of both plant and animal products.

Since the early 2000s, competition has increased, particularly with the entry of new members into the Union, and long-standing Member States have tended to specialise their production more and more.

Within crop production, France strengthened its position in cereals, but lost ground on certain emblematic productions such as wine and industrial plants. The erosion is even more marked on livestock production France remains the leading European producer of livestock and poultry, but is now followed, depending on the product, by Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland or Spain.
