In April 2018, output increased sharply in services (+2.7%) after a near-stability in March.

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In April 2018, output increased sharply in services (+2.7%) after a near-stability in March.
Services output rose over the last three months
Over the last three months (February to April), services production increased by 0.5% compared to the previous three months.
It grew by 1.0% in business support activities, be it in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+1.1%) or in administrative and business service activities (+0.8%). It rose sharply in information and communication (+1.6%) and more slightly in accommodation and food services activities (+0.3%) and transportation and storage (+0.2%). However, it decreased in household services (−2.7%) and in real estate activities (−0.2%).
Output grew sharply over a year
In services, output of the last three months rose sharply over a year (+4.8%), with an increase in all sectors.
It went up strongly in business support (+6.4%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+7.5%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+5.7%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+6.1%), transportation and storage (+3.3%), accommodation and food service activities (+3.7%) and household services (+1.7%). It increased more moderately in real estate activities (+0.7%).

Strong rebound in business support
In April 2018, output in business support activities grew strongly (+3.8%) after a virtual stability in March (−0.1%).
It went up sharply in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.4% after −0.6% in March), particularly in activities of head offices and management consultancy (+4.2% after −1.4%), scientific research and development (+3.0 after +1.0%), architecture and engineering activities (+3.2% after −0.8%) and advertising and market research (+8.1% after −1.3%).
Output also expanded strongly in administrative and business support activities (+4.4% after +1.0%), notably in other administrative and business support activities (+7.5%), employment activities (+4.1%) and services to building and landscape activities (+5.3%).
Marked acceleration in information and communication
Output in information and communication accelerated markedly in April (+2.8% after +0.2%), due to computer programming (+3.6%) and edition (+6.7%).
Large increase in transportation and storage
After a virtual stability In March, output in transportation and storage increased considerably in April (+2.5%), notably in warehousing and support for transportation (+4.4%) and land transport (+2.1%). By contrast, it declined in air transport (−5.3%).
Slight rise in household services
Output in household services rose again slightly in April (+0.2% after +0.4% in March). It still grew in other personal services (+0.7% after +1.1%) but went down in arts, entertainment and recreation (−0.2% after a virtual stability in March).
Virtual stability in accomodation and food service activities
As in March, output in accommodation and food services was virtually stable in April (+0.1% after 0.0%). It increased again in food and beverage service activities (+0.4% after +0.4%) but it also decreased again in accommodation (−1.0% after −1.2%).
Revisions
The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in March 2018 has been revised upwards by 0.1 points, mainly due to raw series updating. Initially published at −0.2%, it has been stated at −0.1%.
