Payroll employment in retail trade driven by the food trade
2.2 million people are employed in retailing. Just after the crisis, the self-employed accounted for almost half of the change in employment in the sector. Payroll employment has increased, especially in the food trade and personal equipment, but has shrunk in household equipment. In 2013, units that were part of groups employed 61% of payroll employees and contributed 89% to the growth in post-crisis employment. Employment is particularly dynamic in the subsidiaries of foreign groups.
