Between 1995 and 2015, production in the renting of goods sector increased from €21 to €38 billion, hovering around 1% of total production. It rose by 5% per year on average between 1995 and 2008; since 2009, as a result of the crisis, it has grown only slightly (+0.4%). After this date, motor vehicle rental has been eroded, due to a decline in car use and the upturn in the sharing economy. Conversely, the renting of machines, equipment and especially personal goods continues to grow, superseding the purchase of these goods.

In twenty years, there has been a net creation of 38,000 salaried jobs in rental sector enterprises, more than half of them in the rental of personal and household goods.
