Insee PremièreMass retirements in all regions between now and 2020

Nathalie Delattre, direction régionale du Nord - Pas-de-Calais, Insee

With the arrival of the “baby-boom” generations at retirement age, mass retirements have taken place since the early 2000s and are expected to continue until 2020. Among those who were employed in 2009, almost eight million, or three out of ten, should have permanently left the labour market within this time frame. However, with the evolution of the legislative framework for retirement, the labour force is tending to continue to work to increasingly advanced ages. This has helped to stagger the cessation of activity and increase the proportion of older workers in employment. The regions most affected by retirements should be those where the initial proportion of older people in employment is greatest, especially Limousin and Auvergne. As for professions, either in terms of numbers or proportion in employment, services to individuals and communities are the most affected with more than one million permanent retirements by 2020.
