Insee PremièreSixty years of working-time reduction across the world

Gérard Bouvier et Fatoumata Diallo, division Synthèses des biens et services, Insee

Annual working time has decreased in all developed countries since 1950, initially because of the spread of payroll employment, then because of the reduction in annual working hours for full-time paid employees. In the past thirty years or so, another determinant has been the rise in part-time employment. The impact of this factor has been somewhat attenuated in France since the implementation of the 35-hour work week.
