In 2008, 364,800 people born in a French overseas département (DOM) were living in metropolitan France (mainland + Corsica). The group comprises one out of four natives of the French West Indies and one out of seven natives of Réunion Island. The West Indians tend to live in the Paris agglomeration; the Réunionnais, in southern France. Their employment rate and education level are comparable to those of other residents of metropolitan France. Most DOM-born women work in the local-government or public-hospital divisions of the civil service, while DOM-born men work mainly in transport, logistics, and the building industry.
