The aim of the survey is to provide information at the level of the retail establishment, which allows to construct performance ratios such as turnover per square meter or turnover per worker.These performance ratios can then be related to various store level or firm level determinants of performance, such as location or membership of a retail network.

This information is requested by the French economic administration, as well as business professionals, chambers of commerce and industry, local authorities, research departments and economists seeking to measure the profitability and competitiveness of enterprises at the local level or conduct place-based policy studies.

The Retail Outlets Survey was previously conducted in 1980, 1982, 1986, 1992, 1998 and 2005. It supplements the Annual Business Survey (EAE, until 2007) and the Annual Sectoral Survey (ESA, from 2008), for the analysis of the retail trade and craft industry sectors.

Since 2004 INSEE has decided to survey enterprises rather than establishments. Entreprises are requested to provide the relevant information for all of their retail establishments.
