The gross trade margin, which measures the surplus generated by the business (sales of goods minus acquisition costs), is integrated in the computation process of the gross domestic product (GDP). By product, the gross trade margin is included in the resources-uses balance of the national accounts.

The objective of the survey is to collect the distribution of the gross trade margins by product during the financial year 2012, at a level of aggregation of product fine enough to restore margins by product of the resources-uses balance.

The survey takes the form of a complementary part of the annual sectoral survey for the financial year 2012 (ESA 2012), on a limited number of sectors of the trade activities defined according to two criteria: their weight in the total gross trade margin in the French economy and the degree of dispersion of their sales between different products.
