The monthly survey on the activity of supermarkets (Emagsa) aimed to obtain quickly (one month after the date of observation) monthly indices of the turnover of the sector. The survey is stopped since 2023.

It also provided a breakdown of turnover by form of sales (supermarket, hypermarket) and per broad product family (food, non-food and fuel), thereby allowing more precise analysis of outlook trends.

The turnover indices obtained from the Emagsa survey contributed to the early estimation of the 30-day monthly retail sales volume index. They were also used to feed the national commercial accounts. Cash register data and payment card data are now used for the calculation of this 30-day monthly retail sales volume index.

The early estimate of the monthly retail sales volume index produced at 30 days is covered by the European Regulation on short-term statistics (EC Regulation STS No. 1165/98 of 19 May 1998 , As amended by its subsequent amendments).

The first survey was conducted in 1997 under the name of the monthly survey of large-scale distribution (EMAGS).

The survey is stopped since 2023.
