Adult education survey
AES
AES
The survey named 'Formation des adultes' in French is collected in the scope of the European Adult education survey (AES) which is defined under EU regulation. It aims to measure participation in education and training according to harmonized concepts at EU level and therefore making comparison between countries possible. The survey also aims to characterize the nature of the training (level, field, length, etc.) and the profile of those who do take part in training activities. Finally, it enables to seize the difficulties when it comes to getting access to training or the reasons that led to not following any training at all. Analyses can be done through several breakdowns thanks to many sociodemographic variables available in the survey (age, sex, level of educational attainment, situation on the labour market, etc.).
Three surveys were conducted: in 2006, 2012 and 2016.
While the 2006 survey was the French declination of a pilot AES survey, the 2012 and 2016 surveys are based on a Community Regulation which specifies the variables to be sent to Eurostat and the survey period, the scope and the minimum accuracy required for some indicators.
In 2006, the survey was an additionnal module to the the labour force survey (LFS). In 2012 and 2016, it was a dedicated survey, on a specific sample, in accordance with European guidelines.
In 2022, the French section of the European survey AES will be collected via the Lifelong Learning (FLV) survey.
