The objective of the 2023 Household Wealth Survey "Enquête Patrimoine" is to describe the household situation with regard to financial, real-estate and professional assets and liabilities in France.

It is used to observe the distribution of assets and liabilities values as well as the different asset holding patterns across households. It also provides particularly comprehensive information on factors accounting for wealth accumulation:

  • family and professional biography;
  • gifts and inheritances;
  • income and financial situation;
  • observation of the processes involved in the creation and transfer of economic assets.

The 2023 survey is part of a European framework; in partnership with the Banque de France, Insee produces the microdata used as input into the French part of the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS), a harmonized system of wealth surveys supervised by the European Central Bank (ECB).

The Life History and Wealth Survey 2023 is the ninth, after the surveys in 1986, 1991-92 In this framework, the survey now takes place every three years : in 2023, some households are surveyed for the 4th time.(Enquêtes Actifs financiers), 1997-98, 2003-04, 2009-10, 2014-15 (Enquêtes Patrimoine), 2017-18 and 2020-21.
