In Q3 2024, production costs in construction rose by 0.3% over a quarter and by 0.9%
over a year Costs of production indices in construction - third quarter 2024
In Q3 2024, the production costs in construction rose by 0.3% over a quarter, after +0.2% in the previous quarter. They were almost stable in civil engineering (+0.1% after +0.6%): materials costs fell back (-0.5% after +2.2%) and energy costs fell less strongly than in previous quarter (-3.7% after -7.9%), while labour costs accelerated (+1.1% after +0.7%). Production costs continued to rise in building construction (+0.2%, as in previous quarter), the rise of labour costs (+0.8% after +0.7%) was partially offset by a fall in energy costs, which continued to intensify (-4.3% after - 2.7%). They sped up in specialised construction works (+0.4% after +0.1%), driven by a rebound in renovation materials costs (+0.2% after -0.4%).
Year on year, the production costs in construction rose at almost the same rate as in the previous quarter (+0.9% after +1.0%). They accelerated slightly in building construction (+0.7% after +0.5%), they slowed down in civil engineering (+0.7% after +1.2%) and rose in specialized construction works at the same rate as in the previous quarter (+1.0%).

Revision
For the second quarter of 2024, the quarterly change of the construction production cost index, published in September 2024, has been revised downwards by 0.2 points to +0.2%, instead of the +0.4%; its annual change has been revised downwards by 0.4 points to +1.0%, instead of the +1.4%.
For further information
Monthly production cost indices are released every three months.
These indices aggregate the cost indices of six or seven factors of production: capital, labour, energy, materials, services, transport and wastes (only for public works).
These indices are subject to revision. They are primarily used as inputs for the national accounts and macroeconomics analyses.
Next issue: end of March 2025.
