Food products: moderate rebound

In July 2024, household food consumption recovered modestly (+0.4% after ‑1.1% in June 2024 – revised data). In detail, this rise was mainly due to a rebound in agri-food products, notably purchases of meat and “other food products”, while the consumption of agricultural products (which are unprocessed products) was down for the fourth consecutive month.

Tobacco consumption rebounded slightly.

Engineered goods: stability

In July 2024, household consumption of engineered goods was stable. The increase in spending on “other engineered goods" (+0.7%) was largely counterbalanced by the drop in purchases of textile-clothing (‑0.7%) and durable goods (‑0.2%).

Durable goods: slight downturn

In July 2024, consumption of durable goods retreated slightly (‑0.2% after +0.5 % in June 2024). This downturn was mainly linked to a decline in purchases of transport equipment (‑2.7% after +2.0 % in June 2024), especially new and used cars, and to a lesser extent, the decrease in purchases of other durables goods such as jewelry and glasses. Conversely, consumption of housing equipments rebounded strongly (+3.8% after ‑0.9% in June 2024) due to the rise in purchases of telephones, furniture and household appliances.

Textile-clothing: downturn

In July 2024, spending on clothing and textiles retreated (‑0.7% after +1.0% in June 2024). This drop is mainly explained by a decline in purchases of shoes and leather.

Other engineered goods: rebound

In July 2024, consumption of “other engineered goods” rebounded (+0.7% after ‑0.2% in June 2024). This increase was linked to a strong rebound in purchases of perfumes.

*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2020 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).

Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:

– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);

– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);

– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).

The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
