Insee FocusSummer 2022: tourist numbers above pre-crisis levels

Alice Mainguené, Pierre Girard (Insee), Barbara Castellettifont (Banque de France)

Hotel and campsite occupancy from June to August 2022 was 3% higher than its pre-crisis level. Resident customers were significantly more present than in 2019 and remained the main component of tourism in France. Since June 2022, residents of metropolitan France spent more nights in market accommodation (hotels, campsites, rentals from individuals, etc.) than in non-market accommodation (second dwellings, in family or friend’s house). The international guests returned as many as before the health crisis; the absence of tourists from China, Japan or Russia was compensated by the European clientele. Travel expenditure by foreign tourists in the summer of 2022 was 7% higher than in 2019, due to price increases, particularly in hotels and restaurants. With higher occupancy and higher prices, revenue increased by 14% in accommodation and food services in July 2022, compared to July 2019.
