More and more inhabitants in urban units

French urban units characterize the municipalities according to both continuity of the built-up area and the number of inhabitants. A new delineation of urban units was carried out in 2020. In 2017, 52.9 million inhabitants lived in one of the 2,467 urban units, as delineated in 2020. Ten years earlier, the population of the 2,289 urban units in 2010 was 50.1 million. The change of 2.8 million inhabitants is mainly due to the population growth of municipalities belonging to an urban unit in 2010 and 2020. It is also the result of the integration of new municipalities with high population growth.
