In 2017, household consumption expenditure was lower in the French overseas departments than in metropolitan France
Consumption expenditure was lower in households in overseas departments than in those in metropolitan France. Disparities in spending by income and household profile were higher in the overseas departments. As a result, the consumption level of single-parent families and couples without children deviated more from the average compared to in metropolitan France. The overseas territories and metropolitan France shared the same main items of expenditure. However, the order of these items differs. Spending on housing and food often lagged behind transport expenditure in overseas departments. The exception was Mayotte where households spent a quarter of their budget on food, on average.
