770,000 babies born in France in 2017: six out of ten were born out of wedlock
In 2017, 770,000 babies were born in France. Six out of ten newborns have unmarried parents. At the beginning of 20th, this applied to less than one out of ten births.
The proportion of births outside marriage exceeded 50% in most of the country. It is highest in the overseas départements and regions, and in Western France. Among countries in the European Union, France has the highest proportion of births outside marriage.
