Insee FocusFrom the north to the south, natural and migratory shifts are pitting departments against one another

Vincent Vallès, direction régionale d'Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Insee

From 2010 to 2015, the populations have developed differently from one department to the next, depending on natural shifts (births and deaths) and on arrivals and departures on the departmental soil. The natural surpluses linked to the youth of the population are characteristics of the most urbanised departments. The surplus incoming versus outgoing ratios reflect the attractiveness of the South and West, even though the Mediterranean coastline is starting to see a downturn. Due to migration effects, differences in population dynamics are more pronounced than before.
