Insee PremièreFilm projection: growth driven by multiplexes

Catherine Souquet, division Services, Insee

The film projection sector enjoyed dynamic growth from years 2005-2015 (+44% in value terms). Consequently, the number of seats increased by 8%, despite a slight drop in the number of cinemas. That vitality came from the multiplexes, while stand-alone theatres lost ground. The percentage accounted for by the non-commercial sector (municipal or association-run cinemas) remained stable, at around 13% of total tickets.

Overall, the sector earned 1.5 billion in turnover in 2015, with France’s three main chains attracting nearly half of total activity. Its investment rate was higher than in all merchant services (37% compared to 23% in 2015), due in particular to the shift to digital. Profitability in the sector was high.
