In 2018, new investments financed by leasing and by lease with purchase option (LOA) are still increasing, reaching 33.6 billion Euro in value. The activity continues to be extremely dynamic with households: it is growing at a similar pace to last year (+ 26.1%) reaching 9.5 billion Euro. New business investmentshave greatly improved compared to 2018 (+ 7.5% after + 0.9%). They represent 24.1 billion euros in 2018.

The dynamism of leasing is driven by all types of contracts. Real estate leasing strongly resumes in 2018 (+ 10.5% after -29.5%) and represents 4.4 billion. The amounts of equipment leasing (15.8 billion) and business LOAs (3.9 billion) are also experiencing very positive developments (respectively + 5.8% and + 11.0%). ).

The rise in equipment leasing is still due to the demand in motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers

In 2018, the rise inequipment leasing remained mainly driven by automotive products (+ 18.2% after + 12.9%) and machinery and equipment (+ 10.8% after + 7.3%). These two types of products account for nearly 80% of the equipment leasing investments made in France. Investments in other transport equipment increase but at a slower pace than in 2017 (+ 16.1% after + 26.4%) while investment in computer, electronic and optical products fell (-4.2% after + 6.0%).

Equipment leasing was boosted by transport activities as well as the construction sector

In 2018, equipment leasing is mainly driven by demand from transport and warehousing activities (+ 18.8%) and construction (+ 12.4%). These two sectors are responsible for most of the overall growth. Financial and insurance activities, real estate activities and other service activities are also dynamic.

The recovery in real estate leasing was mainly due to building contracts

In 2018, the recovery in real estate leasing investments (4.4 billion after 3.9 billion) is found in all types of acquisition and appears the strongest for buildings (+ 19.2%), followed by lands (+ 10.6%) and new construction and civil engineering contracts (+ 3.9%). Real estate leasing resumes mainly for factories (+ 22.1%) and stores and businesses (+ 12.5%).

Contrasting trends in real estate leasing

In 2018, changes by business sector in real estate leasing investments were mixed.

On the one hand, there is a strong appreciation from several sectors : real estate activities (nearly half of the total investment, + 37.1%), manufacturing industries (+ 35.8%), production and distribution of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (+ 44.5%), water production and distribution (+ 66.3%), information and communication sector (+74 , 0%) or administrative and support services (doubling compared to 2017).

On the other hand, many sectors decrease their investment. The trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-30.6%), transportation and storage (-15.6%), accommodation and food services (-37.8%) , financial and insurance activities (-57.3%), education (-24.3%), human health (-36.9%), arts and entertainment (-15.9%) ) and other service activities (-48.5%) are experiencing significant decreases.

Lease with purchase option (LOA) remains dynamic but is running out of steam in a few sectors

In 2018, LOA contracts with companies progressed in the majority of sectors of activity, including in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+ 40.5%), in the manufacturing industry ( + 32.6%), in construction (+ 41.3%), in specialized, scientific and technical activities (+ 24.8%) or also in human health (+ 10.9%). Conversely some sectors saw their investment decrease and in particular, that of financial and insurance activities (-18.4%), which accounted for nearly a third of investment LOA companies in 2017.
