For further information:

In September 2019, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets and in large and predominantly food stores fell back by 0.2% over a month after an acceleration in the previous month (+0.3% in August after +0.1%).

Excluding hyper and supermarkets, the prices were stable after a +0.3% rebound in August.

Considering all kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods dropped by 0.2%, after +0.3% in August.

Year on year, the prices in hyper and supermarket slightly slowed down

Compared with the same month last year, the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets barely decelerated: +1.8% after +1.9% in the three previous months. In large and predominantly food stores, the prices continued to slow down (+1.7% in September after +1.8% in August and +1.9% in July).

In the other kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods were less dynamic than in the previous month: in September they rose by 1.6% year on year, after +1.7% in August. As in July and August, their increase was less pronounced than in hyper and supermarkets.

Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods slightly slowed down year on year: +1.7% year on year in September, after +1.8% in August.

Over a month, downturn in food prices in hyper and supermarkets

In September 2019, the prices of food (excluding fresh products) sold in hyper and supermarkets fell back after an acceleration in the previous month: −0.2% after +0.4% in August. Year on year, they slightly slowed down for the second consecutive month (+2.1% in September after +2.2% in August and +2.3% in July and in June).

This downturn over a month resulted from those, combined, in the prices of meat, beverages and other food products.

The prices of meat sold in hyper and supermarkets dropped in September after a sharp rise in August (−0.3% after +1.0%). Year on year, they rose by 3.3%, as in the previous month.

After an increase in August, the prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets slightly fell over a month in September (−0.1% after +0.1%). Year on year, their rise was less marked than in August: +2.0% in September after +2.2%.

The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) also decreased in September (−0.2% after +0.2% in August). Year on year, they slowed down for the third consecutive month (+1.5% after +1.7% in August).

In September, the prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets dropped by 0.2% after +0.1% in August. Year on year, they barely gathered pace: +0.2% after +0.1% in August.
