In October 2018, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets and in large and predominantly food stores were stable after a 0.1% downturn in September.
In October 2018, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets and in large and predominantly food stores were stable after a 0.1% downturn in September.
Excluding hyper and supermarkets, prices slightly rose by 0.2% in October after a stability in September following nineteen months of weak increase.
Considering all kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods slightly recovered (+0.1%) after a 0.1% decrease in the previous month.
Year on year, the prices in hyper and supermarkets rose by 0.8%, as in September and August
Compared with the same month last year, the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets grew by 0.8% in October for the third consecutive month. The same is true in large and predominantly food stores (+0.8% year on year).
In the other kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods continued to rise more sharply than in large distributors: in October they slightly accelerated to 2.1% year on year, after +2.0% in the two previous months. It has been the largest increase since August 2013.
Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods increased by 1.1% year on year, as in September and August.

Stability in food prices in hyper and supermarkets
In October 2018, the prices of food (excluding fresh products) sold in hyper and supermarkets were stable over a month, as in September. Year on year, they rose at the same pace as in the previous month (+1.1%).
The stability over a month resulted from a decrease in meat prices offset by a slight increase in beverages prices whereas those of other food products were stable.
After a marked downturn in September (−0.3%), meat prices fell a little less markedly than in the previous month (−0.2%). Year on year, they slowed down: +0.8% after +1.1%.
In October, the prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets increased at the same pace as in the previous month (+0.1%). Year on year, they accelerated again: +1.4% after +1.3% in September and +1.1% in August.
The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) were stable for the second consecutive month. Year on year, they rose by 1.1% after +1.0% in September.
Rebound in the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets
In October, the prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets recovered (+0.1% after −0.3% in September). Year on year, the drop in the prices of these products was accentuated slightly: −0.6%, after −0.5% in the previous month.
