The health crisis caused by COVID-19 and the lockdown had a massive impact on hotel occupancy. An initial estimate of the drop in occupancy was made based on data from three major chains covering the first four months of the year. The number of occupied rooms over this range fell by 61% in March 2020 compared to the figure for March last year and by 79% when comparing April 2020 to April 2019. Over the first four months of the year, the average drop was 37% compared to 2019.

In March 2020, the number of overnight stays by residents in all commercial accommodation across metropolitan France halved (– 49%).
