In 2022, the summer Olympic sports federations issued 8.8 million annual licences, representing one licence for every seven inhabitants. Football, tennis and horse ridding federations accounted for 44% of licences. Relative to local population, the number of licences is higher in the Atlantic coast regions (Pays de la Loire, Bretagne and Nouvelle‑Aquitaine), as well as in urban areas of intermediate density or peri-urban rural areas.

After a sharp fall during the health crisis, the number of licences issued by summer Olympic sports federations returned to its 2017 level in 2022. In five years, the proportion of women with a licence has increased. Still, only one in three licences is held by a woman in 2022.

Winter Olympic federations issued 134,000 licences, non-Olympic federations 1.7 million and Paralympic federations 82,000.
